Job Summary
The Environmental Health & Safety Manager is the business owner for EHS across the STS, TCD and Veridos businesses. This position owns the development, implementation, effectiveness and continuous improvement of EHS programs, management systems and culture, ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state and local requirements, OSHA and EPA requirements, applicable ISO standards and G+D corporate requirements.
The manager operates independently, proactively identifies risks and compliance gaps, establishes priorities and drives actions to verified completion without routine direction. As a trusted advisor and constructive challenger to Operations and senior leadership, the manager resolves conflict, delivers difficult feedback and holds stakeholders accountable while maintaining effective working relationships.
Job Duties
- Own the EHS strategy, annual objectives, KPIs, audit and inspection schedule, training plan and improvement roadmap; establish priorities based on risk and business needs.
- Conduct routine facility and operational assessments to identify emerging hazards, environmental impacts and compliance gaps before incidents or external findings occur.
- Develop, implement and maintain EHS policies, procedures and controls, including applicable programs for chemical safety, hazardous energy, machine safety, PPE, industrial hygiene and emergency response.
- Own applicable ISO environmental and occupational health and safety management systems, including risk and opportunity assessments, environmental aspects, operational controls, documented information and management reviews.
- Lead internal and external EHS audits and inspections; serve as the primary EHS contact for regulators, auditors and corporate functions, coordinating specialist support when needed.
- Own corrective actions from identification through root-cause analysis, assignment, implementation, effectiveness verification and formal closure. Hold responsible leaders accountable for deadlines and escalate overdue or ineffective actions.
- Lead incident and near-miss investigations; identify underlying causes, implement preventive actions and communicate lessons learned across applicable locations.
- Own EHS training requirements, competency expectations, delivery and completion records; verify understanding and practical application.
- Maintain current safety data sheets, permits, exposure and environmental records, required inspections and regulatory reporting; monitor changes in applicable requirements.
- Evaluate EHS impacts of new equipment, chemicals, processes, construction and facility changes before implementation; ensure identified risks receive appropriate controls.
- Lead each location’s Safety Committee and engage employees in hazard reporting, consultation and continuous improvement.
- Manage EHS budgets and resource proposals; analyze leading and lagging indicators and present risks, trends, recommendations and corrective-action status to leadership.
- Partner with and constructively challenge Operations, Facilities, Engineering, Maintenance, HR, Quality and Security to resolve risks. Integrate EHS improvements with corporate LEAN initiatives and perform other related duties as assigned.
Accountabilities
- Maintain effective EHS controls and regulatory readiness across assigned businesses and locations; identify compliance gaps and drive timely resolution.
- Maintain applicable ISO environmental and occupational health and safety compliance and certification readiness within the assigned EHS scope.
- Achieve agreed EHS objectives and KPIs; report performance accurately and initiate improvement when results fall short.
- Escalate significant hazards, repeated noncompliance, overdue actions and unacceptable risk directly to appropriate senior leadership. Require immediate protective action, including stopping unsafe work when warranted, consistent with company policy.
- Own EHS program outcomes and follow-through while holding operational leaders accountable for implementation and compliance in their areas.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of applicable environmental, occupational health and safety requirements, including OSHA, EPA and relevant state and local requirements.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ISO 14001 environmental management and ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management systems, plus other ISO standards and classifications applicable to company operations. Interpret requirements and translate them into practical controls.
- Ability to lead audits, assess risk, analyze data, investigate incidents and manage corrective actions with verified effectiveness.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; explain technical findings and business implications clearly to employees, managers and executives.
- Strong organization, attention to detail and proficiency with Microsoft Office and EHS reporting, inspection and recordkeeping tools.
- Ability to travel as required and support EHS needs across assigned locations and shifts.
Leadership and Behavioral Competencies
- Work independently and proactively with limited daily supervision; identify what needs to be done, set priorities and take ownership through completion.
- Influence and hold leaders accountable without relying on direct reporting authority; challenge practices and decisions when EHS risks exist.
- Manage conflict, resistance and difficult conversations professionally; deliver direct, fact-based feedback to employees, peers and senior leaders.
- Use sound judgment to balance operational priorities with EHS requirements without compromising compliance; distinguish routine corrective actions from matters requiring immediate escalation.
- Build effective relationships while maintaining clear expectations, firm deadlines and consistent follow-through.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline required or equivalent experience.
- Minimum five years of progressive EHS experience in manufacturing or an industrial environment; seven or more years preferred. Experience must include compliance, audits, incident investigation, corrective actions and management systems.
- Demonstrated experience independently managing an EHS program or serving as the primary EHS business owner strongly preferred.
- Experience engaging senior leadership, regulatory agencies and external auditors required.
- CSP, ASP, CHMM or equivalent professional certification preferred; ISO 14001 and/or ISO 45001 auditor training preferred.
The pay range for this position is $90,000-$110,000 and is eligible for an annual bonus.
